I'm seem to have developed a renewed interest in the sci-fi genre. Having already seen David Lynch's film version of Dune I have decided belatedly to read the book. I believe if you intend to read the book you should always do it before you see the film otherwise the imagination is tainted by someone else’s vision but its too late to worry about that now!
I thought it was the presence of aliens that turned me off sci fi but in fact they might be part of the appeal, their otherness. I remember watching every episode of V, those aliens were reptilian. They wore a human form that was like a mask that could be torn away, they were “fake” humans (uncanny).
I read recently about a lizard that when it is under threat it’s ribs are exposed through the skin like barbs and they are poisonous to boot-that is pretty strange and unexpected.
I digress…
The sci fi films that work for me are “Logan’s Run” & “Blade runner”, they are not too far divorced from reality and “Blade Runner” in particular has elements of the uncanny.
David Lynch’s film didn’t really have aliens as such which I think was a good thing. There was a foetal worm like thing (a motif that crops up in Eraserhead) which still had recognisably human elements although it was not real enough looking (you could see it was a made thing). Far better and by far the more repulsive was the leader of the "Harkonnens, he was all boils and dribble and all too obviously human.
